I am not a fan of [Dallas] Mavericks...(ok, Sarah Palin included)

Tonight we are audience to Game 1 of the 2011 NBA Finals, a rematch of the Heat and Mavs. As a diehard Houston Rockets fan, it goes against my very soul to root for the Mavs. LeBron and Co. might win championships anyway, so in my heart the onus to deny Dallas another opportunity at the title is paramount to me. Let's go Heat!

[REPOST from jt4] A recollection... (aka "The First Party I Ever Threw in College")

LINK (aka your prelude): Students Engineer Danceoff (courtesy The Daily Texan)

I know what you're thinking. Only Jon Tran, right? [I hope so.]

As I remember, Biomedical Engineering at the time was the new kid on the block at UT, and the members of that first class were struggling to find a sense of social identity. Without boast, we gave the world the BME Danceoff. Starting as an inside joke, fervor grew in earnest and what we had we knew was unique and truly ours. Being the mastermind of logistics, I took what excitement we had accumulated and all of a sudden, we threw what ended up being the most ridiculous and memorable college party ever during college...

It was held a Tao's Co-op, a shithole really, but the right kind. It had an underground fight club feel that had the right kind of caricature faux-hardcoreness that the Zoolander "walk-off" scene had. The crowds roared and cheered as we danced and pitted battle against one another. Gladiators of the Dance Floor we were, and every subsequent match built excitement to a thrilling conclusion. We weren't really dancers, no. And we didn't really try to hide it. But the mob environment lent itself to madness, and we reveled in the entertainment we brought to everyone involved.

I ended up losing to Malisha, a friend I still keep up with every now and then, since she brought her Indian army and wrongly swayed the outcome (which I still contend I won handily). David Cho, one of my best BME buddies, ended up taking the crown (apparently "CHO! CHO!" is an easy thing for drunk people to endlessly chant) in a landslide fashion. Fun was had by all (and we actually threw a 2v2 sequel the following year).

What actually surprised me was the reaction from non-BME people who had come that night (especially those who had heard about the event from the website or the Daily Texan article). A lot of people said they had a blast, and how the uniquely "enginerdiness" of the event gave everything a charm that was literally uncomparable.

AFTERMATH: I ended up stone-cold sober because I was too busy with running the party to drink or meaningfully engage in the after-danceoff debauchery, but I was too satisfied with a successful party to even care...and at least your boy represented:
